A custom plush price needs a defined design, quantity and delivery scope. To budget a commercial order, ask for a written quotation that separates the product price, one-time development charges and costs to reach your receiving location. A unit price alone cannot tell you the total amount you will need.
Aokuma’s factory is in Dongguan and covers 12,000 square metres. Our standard minimum is 500 pieces per design. List quantities for each design, size and colourway so the minimums and pricing can be confirmed for your project. This guide helps brands, retailers and project buyers prepare a comparable quote request; it does not publish a current unit-price list or a guaranteed landed-cost estimate.
Request a design-specific plush quotation. Send your artwork or design description, finished size, quantity per design, sales market, delivery destination and required date. If you have a target budget, say whether it covers the product only or delivery to your warehouse.
- Keep the specification consistent. Compare the same design version, materials, quantity, packaging and acceptance requirements.
- Identify the endpoint. Record the trade term, named place, included services and exclusions.
- Keep unknowns visible. An unquoted charge needs confirmation before you treat the budget as complete.
- Separate MOQ from sample-fee refund terms. Aokuma’s production minimum is 500 pieces per design; the standard sample-fee refund threshold is 3,000 units of the same design.
How Much Does a Custom Plush Toy Cost?
The useful answer is a price for your approved scope. Ask suppliers to identify what their number includes and which assumptions remain open. Two quotations for a “12-inch plush” can describe different patterns, fabrics, decorations, packaging and delivery arrangements.
For an initial comparison, provide one dated specification and request the same quantity options from each supplier. At Aokuma, begin at 500 pieces per design. If demand supports a larger order, ask for an additional quantity option without assuming a particular discount. Compare the total order commitment as well as the unit price.
| Comparison field | Ask every supplier to confirm | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Design and version | Artwork reference, finished dimensions and measurement method | A similar-looking product may use a different construction |
| Quantity and variants | Units for each design, size and colourway | A combined total can conceal separate minimums or setups |
| Product and packing | Materials, decoration, accessories, labels, individual packing and cartons | A cheaper quote may omit part of the requested scope |
| Development and checks | Sampling, revision allowance, agreed testing and inspection scope | One-time or third-party charges may sit outside the unit price |
| Commercial basis | Currency, trade term and named place, quotation date and validity, payment milestones | The same number can cover different costs and commitments |
| Open assumptions | Items awaiting a sample, material check, packing measurement or freight quote | An estimate may change when those inputs are confirmed |
Use the MOQ and variant guide to organise quantities. If a quotation is preliminary, ask what must be resolved before the supplier can confirm the price and how long that confirmation will remain valid.
What Determines the Price of a Custom Plush Toy?
Make the choices that define the product explicit. Their cost effect depends on the whole design and order; a generic percentage increase cannot replace a quotation.
- Size and shape: state the finished dimensions, pose and how size is measured. Protruding ears, tails or accessories can affect both construction and packing.
- Fabric and filling: identify the intended texture, colour reference, filling and any material requirements. Ask for a clearly identified alternative if the original choice is unavailable or outside budget.
- Decoration and components: mark embroidery, printed areas, clothing, attachments and functional parts. Include artwork and the required finish for each.
- Packaging: specify individual bags or boxes, tags, labels, inserts, barcodes and carton requirements. Confirm which artwork and packing labour are included.
- Order quantities: list each design, size and colourway separately. Keep the specification unchanged when requesting another quantity option.
- Intended use and requirements: provide the sales market, intended age group and any buyer-specific requirements so the testing and documentation scope can be reviewed.
For material selection and substitution records, use the plush materials specification guide. If recycled content or another credential is part of the brief, identify the evidence you need using the requirement-matched supplier credentials guide. A requested claim and verified evidence are separate parts of the review.
Testing should be scoped for the actual product and destination. Ask who will confirm the requirements, which samples are needed and whether any design change affects the agreed work. The plush safety requirements guide explains that review in more detail.
How Should a Custom Plush Quote Be Broken Down?
Ask for enough detail to understand the scope and compare alternatives. You do not need to assume that every supplier will disclose its internal labour costs or margin. For buying decisions, distinguish charges paid per unit, charges paid for the project, and charges paid for the shipment.
| Cost group | Possible items to identify | Question to resolve |
|---|---|---|
| Per-unit product scope | Plush construction, decoration, agreed accessories and packing | Which specification version and quantity does this price cover? |
| Development and one-time work | Sample making, agreed extra revisions or special development | What is included, payable separately or refundable under agreed conditions? |
| Testing and inspection | Required product testing and any separately commissioned inspection | Who provides it, what is covered, and who pays? |
| Transport and destination costs | Freight, insurance, clearance, duties or taxes, inland delivery and receiving | Which items are included in the quoted delivery scope and which need another quote? |
Mark each item as included in a named line, quoted separately, not required for the agreed scope, or still unconfirmed. This prevents both missing charges and counting the same service twice. Keep the quotation number, revision and date beside each amount.
For the manufacturing activities behind the product quotation, see plush production cost components. Use project-specific written figures for your comparison rather than carrying a general cost breakdown into your budget.
Compare a requested change separately
If you need to reduce cost, keep the original brief as the baseline. Ask the supplier to quote a specific alternative, such as revised packaging or an agreed fabric choice, and explain its effect on appearance, function, requirements and timing. Record the saving only after the revised scope is priced. Buying more units solely to lower the unit price can increase the cash and storage needed for the order.
How Much Are Sample Fees and Setup Costs?
Aokuma’s standard sample fee is USD 200 per design, including up to three revision rounds. Standard initial sample making takes 7–10 working days. The sample fee is refundable when you order 3,000 units of the same design. Special cases are quoted and agreed separately.
Confirm the sample start date, scope and review process in writing. Included revision rounds do not mean all revisions, buyer approvals and physical delivery fit within the initial sample-making window. Changes can alter timing. Sample freight, testing, special materials and extra work need separate confirmation.
The 3,000-unit refund threshold applies to the same design. Different designs do not automatically combine to qualify, and an order at the 500-piece production minimum does not automatically refund the sample fee. Ask how and when an eligible refund will be handled before deducting it from a cash budget.
Keep sample payment, any agreed development charges, the bulk deposit and the balance as separate payment milestones. The custom plush sample guide covers artwork preparation, consolidated feedback and sample approval. For dates across the whole order, use the sample-to-warehouse timeline guide.
How Do You Get a Useful Shipping Cost?
Request freight for the actual cargo and destination. Provide or ask the supplier to confirm carton quantity, dimensions, gross weight, packing method, cargo-ready date and delivery address or receiving location. If those measurements are provisional, label the freight estimate accordingly and ask when it will be refreshed.
Ask the freight provider to identify the service, route, validity period, included charges and exclusions. Confirm who handles clearance, destination charges, inland delivery and any receiving appointment. A published container index or another buyer’s shipment cannot establish the price for your cartons.
Record the trade term, named place and applicable version on the quotation. For detailed scope comparisons, use the EXW, FOB and DDP quote-comparison guide. Keep this cost worksheet focused on the amounts and services included, without assuming that a three-letter term answers every destination-specific question.
If you compare shipping options, use the same cargo-ready date and delivery endpoint. Check the required warehouse-arrival date alongside the price. Any split delivery needs its own quantities and costs so that a first shipment is not mistaken for the complete order.
How Should You Budget Import Duties and Taxes?
Have your customs broker or qualified import adviser confirm the classification, origin, valuation basis, applicable measures and expected entry date for the actual shipment. For US imports, the official U.S. Harmonized Tariff Schedule is a starting point for that review. This guide does not provide a current tariff rate or a customs valuation calculation.
Ask for a dated calculation, its assumptions and the party responsible for each charge. If a delivered quotation includes duties or taxes, confirm that scope in writing and identify any exclusions. Avoid adding an estimated duty amount again when the same charge is already included in another line.
Recheck unresolved import costs before committing to the order and refresh the estimate when shipment details change. Keep any tax-recovery assumption separate for review with your adviser; do not count a possible recovery as money already available to fund production.
Build a Cost Worksheet for a 1,500-Unit Order
This blank worksheet is a planning tool, not an Aokuma quotation or a customer case. A 1,500-unit single-design order is used only to show how to organise the budget. Replace that quantity with your own and complete every amount using the relevant written quotation.
- Design/specification version and quantity: __________
- Budget currency and conversion date, if needed: __________
- Delivery endpoint and included receiving services: __________
- Quotation references, dates and validity: __________
| Line | Amount | Evidence and inclusion check |
|---|---|---|
| A. Product quantity × quoted unit price | __________ | __________ |
| B. Sample and agreed development charges outside A | __________ | __________ |
| C. Packing or accessories not already included | __________ | __________ |
| D. Testing or inspection not already included | __________ | __________ |
| E. Freight, insurance and inland delivery not already included | __________ | __________ |
| F. Duties, taxes and clearance charges not already included | __________ | __________ |
| G. Receiving charges within the chosen budget endpoint | __________ | __________ |
| Confirmed cost total: A + B + C + D + E + F + G | __________ | List unresolved items below before calling this complete |
| Unconfirmed costs and separately chosen contingency | __________ | __________ |
| Confirmed refunds or credits, with conditions and timing | __________ | __________ |
Write “included in A,” “not required,” or “unconfirmed” where appropriate. An empty field is not zero. Keep contingency visible rather than presenting it as a supplier charge. For a comparable per-unit budget, divide the total for the agreed scope by the units covered by that budget. If you also calculate cost per expected saleable unit, label that separate calculation and its assumptions.
For 1,500 units of one design, do not subtract Aokuma’s standard sample fee on the assumption that it will be refunded: that quantity is below the 3,000-unit same-design threshold. Any different arrangement needs separate agreement.
A crowdfunding or retail launch also needs its own sales and fulfilment budget. List platform and payment fees, storage, pick-and-pack, delivery to customers, marketing and other launch costs separately as applicable. Do not describe the product-to-warehouse subtotal as the complete cost of running the campaign. Keep a payment calendar alongside the worksheet so you can see what is due before sales proceeds become available.
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does it cost to make a custom plush toy?
Request a quotation for the design, finished size, materials, quantity, packing and delivery scope you need. Aokuma’s standard production minimum is 500 pieces per design. The written quote should identify the unit price, separately payable items, exclusions and validity period.
Why can smaller quantities cost more per unit?
Some development, preparation and purchasing costs can be spread across the order. Ask for quantity alternatives using the same specification, but compare the total cash commitment and inventory requirement before choosing a larger run. No fixed discount applies to every design.
How can I reduce cost without losing the important details?
Identify the design features, safety requirements and delivery deadline that must be preserved. Ask for separately priced alternatives to flexible details, such as packaging or an approved material choice. Review samples and the revised specification before accepting a change.
How much does a sample cost before a bulk order?
Aokuma’s standard fee is USD 200 per design, with up to three revision rounds. Initial sample making takes 7–10 working days; revisions and delivery can add time. The fee is refundable with an order of 3,000 units of the same design. Special cases, sample freight, testing and extra work are confirmed separately.
What is the all-in cost for a 1,500-unit Kickstarter plush?
There is no verified total without the design, packing, destination and current quotations. Use the worksheet to total non-overlapping product, development, testing and delivery costs, then budget campaign and customer-fulfilment costs separately. A 1,500-unit order does not meet Aokuma’s standard sample-fee refund threshold.
Request a Quote You Can Compare and Approve
Send one clear brief so the response can address the product you intend to buy. Include:
- Artwork you are authorised to use, or a design description, plus the current version.
- Finished size, pose, materials and any special components.
- Quantity per design, with sizes and colourways listed separately for confirmation. Aokuma’s standard minimum is 500 pieces per design.
- Intended age group, sales market and any buyer-specific requirements.
- Individual packaging, labels, tags and carton needs.
- Delivery country and receiving location, required arrival date and whether the deadline is fixed.
- Your target budget, if available, with its currency and whether delivery is included.
Send Aokuma your brief for a design-specific quote. Ask for the price basis, included work, exclusions, validity, payment milestones and unresolved decisions. If artwork is not ready, describe what is available and ask what is needed for the next step.
